What is the papacy? A purely spiritual or purely earthly community? Neither of them. The papacy has a mixed character. It has two faces, like the Pagan God Janus. The papacy, next to Christianity, is the greatest phenomenon of the modern world. Of both, unfortunately, the former has, in some respects, exercised an even more powerful influence on the conditions of the human race, and has played a more conspicuous role on the scene of the world. The collection and development of this astonishing dignified system of complete writing would be a history of Western Europe writing. The fall of whole empires, the downfall of religious systems - the dissolution and renewal of society, - the emergence of new states, - the change in customs, habits and laws, - the statesmanship of the courts - the wars of kings, - the fall and the Revival of the sciences, philosophy and the arts - Everything is directly related to the history of the papacy, to whose growth they contributed and whose destiny they helped to decide. Our time and the limits of the globe offer no other field of such immense scope for scientific research. It may suffice, however, to give in general outlines the chief causes which have contributed to the genesis of this dreadful power, and the stages which designate the course of its dreadful gradual development. The whole development of the synagogue of Satan, as I call the Roman Catholic Church, is written here, from the times of the apostle Paul, who already warned that the mystery of lawlessness is already at work (2 Thessalonians 2), even in the Today's (Wylie's) and also our time.
